Basic grant reinstated in higher education
The government intends to reinstate the basic grant in higher education. If you graduate within 10 years, the basic grant will be converted into a gift, including interest. If you don’t make this deadline, you will need to repay the total amount, including interest.
The basic grant for students living away from home will be higher than that for students living at home. The amounts proposed are:
- €110.30 per month for students living at home
- €439.20 for students living away from home (€274.90 basic grant + €164.30 temporary increase because of the purchasing power compensation)
The reinstatement of the basic grant is scheduled for 1 September 2023.
Who will receive the basic grant?
Reinstatement of the basic grant will apply to students who:
- re-enrolled in a higher education programme (HBO or university) in the academic year 2023-2024, ánd
- on 1 September 2023 have not received a student finance for longer than the official ('nominal') study duration of their degree programme.
Not yet in notice
The student finance notices for 2023 do not take into account the plan to reinstate the basic grant, as this is not yet confirmed. This is why the notice does not mention anything about the basic grant in higher education from September 2023 onwards.
Applying for the basic grant
Once the government’s plans have been approved by parliament, students can start applying for the basic grant. This will then take effect as of 1 September 2023. If you qualify for the basic grant, we will notify you.
