Double student finance

Do you receive an allowance for your education or your cost of living? And does the allowance come from another country than the Netherlands? Then you might not be eligible for Dutch student finance. Lifelong learning credit also falls under student finance.

Not to combine with student finance

We speak of double student finance when all 4 situations apply to you:

  1. The allowance is money in the form of a gift or loan to pay your studies, cost of living or your voyage.
  2. The allowance is linked to your enrollment for a fulltime course.
  3. The allowance is awarded to you (and not your parents or a go-between) and is paid out by a government of another country than the Netherlands.
  4. You receive the allowance and your Dutch student finance in the same period.

Do all 4 situations apply to you? Then you are not entitled to student finance.

What you can combine with student finance

These allowances or grants can be combined with Dutch student finance:

  • Erasmusbeurs, kingdom scholarship or Tula scholarship.
  • Free or reduced tuition.
  • Free or reduced public transport.
  • A government's taxation measure for students.
  • Allowance or loan that you would get anyhow, whether or not you are a student.
  • Allowance or loan for specific costs when you have a disability or an impairment, such as extra transport or healthcare costs.
  • Compensation for start up costs for your studies, such as a loan for funiture and new clothes, but not for your voyage.
