When to repay
The repayment period for your student debt starts on 1 January following the expiration of your right to student finance.
First you have a preliminary phase, lasting 2 years. During that time you are not required to make repayments, although it is possible. The repayment phase starts after the preliminary phase. During this phase you have to repay your debt. The repayment phase is up to 15 years, or 35 years if the new student finance system applies to you.
Interest is charged during both the preliminary phase and the repayment phase. This is compound interest, which means that interest is also calculated over the interest itself.
In 2018, the annual interest rate is 0%. In 2019, the interest rate will be 0% as well. The interest is charged from the month after the month in which the student finance is credited to your account. As long as you follow a degree programme and qualify for student finance, the interest rate will be determined by the government every calendar year. As soon as you stop your programme, the interest rate will be set for successive 5-year periods.
DUO will calculate a relevant monthly instalment which should enable you to repay the loan in full within 15 years, or 35 years if the new student finance system applies to you. The monthly instalment depends on the amount of student debt you owe and the interest. If the instalment is too high for you, we can also take into account your income.
Use our calculation tool for an indication of your monthly instalment.
Payment by direct debit is mandatory.
Only if you received student finance before 1 August 2009 (MBO) or 1 September 2009 (HBO or university) can you choose to make the payments yourself.
Use the update assistant if you want to change your payment method.
Have you chosen to make the payments yourself? Or did a direct debit fail? Then you can use the following details for your payment:
In the name of: Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs, Groningen
IBAN: NL45 INGB 0705 0019 03 BIC (in case of a foreign payment): INGBNL2A
Payment reference: mention your citizen service number and add 'ILS'. Like this: 1234567898ILS. This will help us to process your payment as soon as possible.
Monthly instalment too high
If you have difficulty paying the monthly instalment DUO has set for you, you can submit a request to have it reduced. We will then use your (combined) income from 2 years ago to calculate how much you can afford to repay. This may result in a monthly instalment of € 0.-.
You can also ask DUO to temporarily stop collecting your student debt. We call this a 'payment free period'.
Usually we automatically take into account your (combined) income when calculating your monthly instalment.
Sometimes you have to submit a request yourself. You can do this in Mijn DUO or with the Verzoek verlagen maandbedrag studieschuld form. We will then retrieve your income data from the Dutch tax office. If you don't have an income in the Netherlands, you have to provide us your income data yourself.
You can temporarily stop the collection of your monthly instalments. The reason is not of importance. The following rules apply:
- You can stop the collection for a total of 60 months - either in a row or spread over multiple periods.
- Interest doesn't stop.
- Your maximum repayment phase of 15 or 35 years will be extended with the number of payment free months you used.
You can apply for a payment free periode via Mijn DUO or with the Wijziging terugbetalen studieschuld form.
