Validity
You can travel with the student travel product from the moment you are enrolled. This is usually from 1 August on an MBO programme and from 1 September for HBO and university. Look in Mijn DUO to find out when you can collect the student travel product from a pick-up machine Link opent externe pagina .
Applying for the travel product later
If you apply later, you can travel from the month following your application. You can only travel in the same month if you applied on the 1st day of the month. You cannot get a student travel product for a period in the past.
Free or discounted travel
When you apply for the student travel product, you choose either a weekday or a weekend subscription. Read below to find out when you can travel for free and when you can travel at a reduced rate.

How much is the discount?
The discount applies to all public transport in the Netherlands. The discount is 40% for the train and 34% for the tram, bus, metro and water bus.
In the train, 3 people can travel with you at a reduced rate Link opent externe pagina . This is only possible during off-peak hours.
