Students in secondary vocational education (MBO) will also be given 35 years to repay their student debt, in line with students in higher education (HBO and university). The interest rate changes as a result. In 2023 the interest is 0.46 percent on loans to be repaid within 35 years, and 1.78 percent on loans to be repaid within 15 years.
Conditions
- You are getting a student grant from 1 August 2023 for the first time for a secondary vocational education degree programme (MBO), or
- you are getting a student grant for a secondary vocational education degree programme, both before and after 1 August 2023.
If you receive the student grant both before and after 1 August 2023 for a degree programme at MBO level, you can opt – before you have to start repaying – to repay the loan under the former rules (15 years) If you are no longer enrolled in a degree programme after 1 August 2023, you will have to repay your student debt for the MBO degree programme within 15 years.
You can find more information on the page about the repayment rules.
Applying
You don’t need to apply for repaying in 35 years. This will be done for you automatically. We will also automatically adjust the interest rate. In July, you will receive a notification about this from DUO.
If you can switch to repaying within 15 years, DUO will let you know what you have to do.
