Financial compensation for students who fell under the student loan system
If you were a student for one or more years while the student loan system was in place (2015-2023), you did not receive a basic grant during that period. That is why the government would like to offer you financial compensation. Whether or not you received a student grant is irrelevant in this situation. The compensation will be offset against your student loan or paid out to you if you no longer have any outstanding student debt.
How much and when
The amount proposed for the compensation is €359 per year, which adds up to €1,436 for four years. DUO plans to pay out the compensation (or offset it against the student loan) from 2025.
Preliminary conditions
- You have studied for at least 12 months under the loan system.
- You meet the conditions for student finance. It does not matter whether you actually received student finance.
- You obtained, or will obtain, your degree within 10 years diploma period.
Automatic notification
Once the plans have been approved by parliament, DUO will notify you automatically if you are eligible for compensation, so you don’t have to do anything yourself at this time.
